The hope that many Nigerians placed in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his campaign is rapidly turning into disappointment as the nation faces unprecedented economic challenges. It is imperative to challenge the President on the urgent issues plaguing our economy, which he promised to address with renewed vigor.
Inflation rates have soared to alarming levels, eroding the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians. The increase in energy costs, particularly in petrol prices, serves as a catalyst for further inflation, affecting every facet of life. With rising importation charges, many essential goods are becoming prohibitively expensive, placing immense pressure on households struggling to make ends meet.
The recent increase in the minimum wage, rather than providing relief, can be seen as a mere justification for the skyrocketing prices of food and other commodities. Basic necessities have become luxuries for many, while the cost of vehicle registration has also surged, further straining the finances of average citizens.
Farmers, the backbone of our economy, are discouraged by the escalating prices of agricultural inputs. This has led to a significant decrease in farm productivity, exacerbating food insecurity and contributing to the growing number of out-of-school children. Graduates are entering the job market in droves, only to find a bleak landscape devoid of opportunities. Small-scale businesses are folding under the weight of high taxes and soaring material costs, while only the well-connected gain access to loans.
Our judiciary system, once seen as a pillar of democracy, is now viewed as a captured institution, failing to uphold justice. Meanwhile, our electoral system appears increasingly dysfunctional, further alienating the populace from their leaders.
The governmentโs approach to addressing food insecurity, such as the provision of rice palliatives, is inadequate. Rather than temporary fixes, we need systemic changes that will reduce prices across the board, potentially through border policy adjustments or other innovative solutions. Nigerians are tired of palliative measures that offer no long-term relief.
As a father of the nation, President Tinubu must heed the cries of his people. The continued increase in petrol prices by NNPC is disheartening and is the primary driver of the current inflation crisis.
My plea to the President is simple: prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over political expediency. History will remember his tenure not by promises, but by actions. It is crucial to understand that power is transient; it is time to listen to the voices of those who elected you and act decisively for their benefit.
Failure to address these issues will result in a growing disillusionment among the electorate, many of whom are already regretting their votes. The current trajectory cannot continue; the people demand meaningful change.
