Some loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari are set to quit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Our source gathered that the politicians led by a former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, and former Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, have concluded plans to leave the party.
According to sources, the former federal executive members are leading the front across the country and may officially declare for a new party on January 29, 2025.
Touted to be their next destination is either the Social Democratic Party (SDP) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The sources hinted that the development may be unconnected to the internal wranglings within the APC that has seen prominent figures in the Buhari bloc including former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, a former aide to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, among others holding several meetings with the leadership of the SDP in the recent past.
Speaking with Our reporter over the weekend, a prominent figure in the bloc held that the alliance is growing across the country and may present a major force that could align with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
The figure who craved anonymity said efforts are on to galvanise support from the South West, South East and South South explained that a sizeable number of Buhari’s men are dissatisfied with the state of the economy, sectionalisation of appointments by President Bola Tinubu as well as the marginalisation of the North by the present government.
“Currently, work has reached an appreciable level. In fact, I can confidently tell you that we have moved beyond petty politics to a national front. The Buhari bloc in the North is led by Malami. El-Rufai is also part of us but does not want it to be like he is leaving APC because of the failed ministerial appointment.
“He (El-Rufai) alongside Showunmi and others have been holding meetings with other political bigwigs apart from SDP. Malami and the former Minister of State for Education under Buhari are the frontliners. They will be the first to declare for a new party, before others join.
“We have notable politicians coming from the South West. By the time our meetings are concluded, everything will be unveiled. By January 29, we may declare for either SDP or ADC. Our leaders are preparing.”
We recalls that the fresh development comes a day after Omoluabi Progressives, a group backed by former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, announced its exit from the APC in Osun State.
