The former speaker of the State of Osun House of assembly, Rt. Hon. Najeem Folasayo Salaam PhD has made it clear that the Standing Committees are the backbone of the parliament, Dr. Salaam made the assertion at a three day legislative retreat for members of Osun 7th Assembly at Royal Park hotels, Iloko-Ijesha.
Dr. Salaam who spoke on the roles of committees in the House of Assembly , said “ the purpose of a parliamentary committee is to perform functions such as finding out the facts of a case,examining witnesses and drawing up reasoned conclusions”.
He further stated that committees aid the parliament by closely and critically examines their areas of jurisdiction. He also charged the members of Osun 7th Assembly to rise up to their obligations as he reminded them the words of Woodrow Wilson in his book Congressional Government, (A Study in American Politics) “Congress in session is Congress on public exhibition, whilst Congress in its committee-rooms is Congress at work”
Furthermore,Dr. N.F Salaam did not forget to mention the setback the committees could encounter which is the availability of resources and he believes it will be resolved as the financial autonomy for State Assemblies awaits implementation.
